Squeaky floor under carpet

I've seen all the videos about buying a $20 to $40 kit to fix a small squeak between the subflooring and floor joist under my carpet. Wondering if I could avoid the cash outlay and find the joist with my ultrasonic stud finder and a couple 3/4" wood screws? Not bourbor, just simple pile carpet. Seems simple but I might be missing something. Looking with advice before I mess something up trying to save a few $$. Many Thanks.

Can you access the floor from underneath? If so you can drive wedges between the joists and subfloor. If not, the studfinder should work. Just use small headed screws.

Drywall screws are fine, hey have served their purpose for 30 years!

Many times I've screwed through carpeting to quiet squeaks. Even if you can't pinpoint the exact location of the floor joist try a screw. If it doesn't hit something solid move over 3/4" and try again and repeat until you find the joist. Just make sure you sink the screws deep enough that they can't be felt under foot.
