How can I remove this part screw part nail thing

Hello, I am trying to remove the old carpet from the stairs, and the carpet gripper has this special part screw part nail thing, I cannot seem to be able to get it out, I just prying it out probably will crack the stairs, any suggestions? thanks!

Grab it with a vise grip and see if you can screw it out.

I tried to use two different kind of pliers, and it just won't come out...

Were they locking pliers? regular pliers will slip but a tightly applied vise grip shouldn't.

Not sure why you would use pliers or vise grips when a wonder bar, cats paw, wrecking bar or claw hammer is the right tool to provide the leverage for pulling nails. You would need to protect the floor with a wide putty knife to keep from denting the floor.

Carpet tack strips often use a combination spiral / ring shank nail that will usually damage the wood floor when the nail is extracted, so if you don't want to damage the floor your best bet would be to cut the head of the nail off and drive it in with a nail set. Then the small hole can be filled.

Its called a ring shank nail, it has ridges that look like a screw but they help keep the nail in place!

I have been installing carpet for 45 years. I have never had trouble pulling out tackstrip nails. Those look like nails someone has added. I would do as the other poster suggested, cut off the heads and set them.

update, cutting off the head was easy, but the rest of it won't go in the floor when it gets hammered, I think the thread on the nail makes it difficult.

Any thoughts? thanks

Use a nail set, as Sam mentioned.
