What nail size is correct for 3/4" 1/4 round?

I have just finished installing laminate flooring and am ready to install the 3/4" 1/4 round. The 1/4 round will be nailed to 1/2" baseboard. I am thinking of using 1 1/4" 18 gauge nails. Is this correct? Should it be 16 gauge? Should it be longer nails?

If you are just shooting into the wood base I would use 1 1/4 - 1 1/2" 18 ga brads.

Engineered over plywood underlayment over old plank flooring: Stapling question.

This may be a silly question, but it's my first hardwood flooring project and I'm freaking about this. I have installed 1/2" plywood over an existing T/G plank floor. There are a lot of screws! (spaced according to APA guidelines) attaching the plywood underlayment to the existing planks. I'm going to glue just the tongues and groves of the 3/8" engineered hardwood (not glue the entire flooring down) and then staple. Won't the staples hit all those underlayment screws? Also, I laid the plywood in the same direction as the existing plank subfloor: perpendicular to the joists (as suggested by APA rep). The length of the room runs parallel to the joists and the doorway is on one of the long walls. I'd like to run the new planks in the longest direction, parallel to the doorway, longest wall and joists. I've seen instructions that suggest the flooring should be laid perpendicular to the joists. Does the addition of the plywood underlayment allow me to run them parallel? Thanks for all the courage I've already received from this forum!Read More

Laminate layout in an oddly-shaped basement

Hi folks, I am doing floating flooring and have the following layout in the basement, all rooms totaling ~1000sq ft. [ATTACH]65428[/ATTACH] Overall I would like all planks laying parallel to wall 2. My plan was to begin with the wall 2 and go toward the office. Not quite sure what to do about wall 3. It's not long enough to be the starting wall. Going from 2 to 3, in the opposite direction, I am estimating 7-8 rows - that's quite a lot. Is this doable? Is there a special technique for laying laminate in the opposite direction? Also, the manual states that I need to remove tongue for all row 1 planks, which only adds to the confusion. Any advice?Read More
