Ideas to replace pine stair treads.

My interior pine stair treads have become worn due to loose carpet tread covers and dogs. I thought about R&R the existing treads, but I'll need to do it a few at a time, since it is the primary access for the dogs and people into the house. I'd prob remove like 4 at a time and temp replace with plywood until I can sand and finish them.
I haven't had much luck searching alternative tread materials. I looked at composite materials, but it's more for decks and not sure if it's appropriate for interiors... thought about ceramic tile... oak...
any ideas for inexpensive but durable tread replacement materials?

Oak is more durable than pine although pine treads are probably cheaper. If you go with new treads, stain [or not] and apply 2 coats of poly on them prior to installation.

If you go with pine again (never plywood), you can finish the treads and apply these stair tread carpets using a narrow crown stapler (they are self adhesive, but meh). I thought of this with your dogs for traction. Ottomanson Jardin Collection Solid Design Dark Grey 9 in. x 26 in. Indoor/Outdoor Carpet Stair Tread (Set of 14)-ST2268-14Pack - The Home Depot
