Match Hardwood Flooring Color

I recently removed a duct chase and have an area with missing flooring. I've ordered the closest flooring match, but the color doesn't quite match. In the areas where the floor was protected from light, the match is almost exact - so I assume it is UV aging of the polyurethane.

Any suggestions for how to match it? The flooring is prefinished hickory.

Not sure there is much you can do with prefinished wood to get a better match. Anything you aplpied over the factory finish wouldn't be a durable. It will probably look better as time goes on. Could you place some furniture over/near that area?

How is the existing floor installed? If floating and snap together you might be able to remove a few pieces of the existing ,replace with new and mix old with the new in the area to be patched.. A few boards with color variation rather than a patched area all the same color might be less noticeable. Depends also on how uniform the existing board color and grain pattern is.

Thanks. The wood is hickory, so there is a lot of variation in the color already. Unfortunately, it is glued down - 2john.

marksr - Do you think I could sand it or put an amber shellac/poly as a final topcoat?

While you could sand and apply a tinted poly or shellac the final finish wouldn't be as durable as the factory oxide finish. Also the color can wear off with traffic. Is the color really that far off? Often what bothers us in the moment ceases to be an issue once we focus on the next project.
