Carpenter Bee and Powder Post Beetle Damage

Good Afternoon

We are battling a couple of different pest. We have a log cabin that has about 20 spots we have found. Some appear to be old, some new, active activity. We have seen carpenter bees, and know we have some damage from them. We have also been told we have powder post beetles. The pest control company has advised doing a fumagation instead of locally treating. Would you do the fumagation over locally treating these spots? Also, how would you suggest treating if locally treating?

I don't know about the powder post beetles but with carpenter bees I shoot sevin dust in the holes. That will kill any bees that are in or enter the cavity and should also kill any that hatch.

Since we don't even know where you are located it's hard to advise whether or not tenting is a good option. I do know it's more commonly done in the deep south.

Treating wood for the boring beetles by surface spraying requires that the wood be porous, meaning no paint, varnish, oil, or any coating. Even then because logs are so thick compared to lumber, the possibility of failure is high.

Fumigation in certain parts of the country is very expensive as they don't do it much. Doesn't leave any kind of residual to prevent future infestation but sometimes is the only way to accomplish the task. If you pursue this route, make sure that the operators do a lot of fumigations. Check word-of-mouth as to their reputation as best you can.
