vintage shower knob removal

Got an old shower cartridge that needs to be replaced. Can anyone help with the knob removal. The front cap does not come off. I'm told it's like a bottle. Push and turn counter clockwise. They are white with gold rings. I'm told they are delta select from the 70's. Any help is appreciated.

I never saw a child proof cap on a shower handle. I think that we could use a pic.

Shut the water to the bathroom. Open the faucet as you would normally. When it's opened all the way, continue to turn it. See if the handle unscrews from the stem.
