Old Toto 3 Bolt Tank Repairs

Working on the above that was made in either 92 or 02 based on the tank stamp. Model is 7872, 2" flush valve. It was leaking between the tank and bowl only on the flush, so bolts ok. I replaced everything in the tank with Fluidmaster and the tank to bowl gasket with a CPI 60172. This is listed as a Kohler part but seems to cross with the Toto 51487 and appears close. The bolt pattern matches.

I still have the same leak after reassembling with new parts. Are there any particular tricks on assembling the tank to bowl? Do I dare put a bead of putty around the tank inlet to "assist" the gasket?

Edit: What about silicone? I rebuilt a 5 gallon toilet a couple yrs ago that no one could identify, so had to reuse the old gasket. I cleaned it thoroughly and applied silicone because there were cracks. It is still working.

I finally reassembled with silicone on the tank/bowl gasket, let it cure overnight and that solved the leak.
