cleaning and reapplying granite grout
Hello, the seam connecting the backsplash to the countertop right behind kitchen faucet has some hairline cracks and got all chipped and moldy. This is due to constant water splashing from the faucet. The c/top and b/splash material is granite and the stuff they are connected to each other is some sort of glue or grout; not caulk for sure because the stuff's hard, hence cracking.
Was wondering about ways to clean out all the damaged grout/glue/or whatever it is and then reapply new seal to restore the clean and water-tight seam. If this this grout, could I then scrape it out, apply new grout and then seal it?
Thanks, h.

I've been told that when you have a joint between 2 surfaces-wall/floor, countertop/backsplash- that you should use caulk rather than grout-because the 2 planes shift/expand-contract at different rates, which leads to cracking. That may have contributed to your situation.
My suggestion: carefully scrape out the old "grout", then replace it with caulk.
I have seen/used caulk color keyed to match grout.
Good luck with your project.

There are carbide tipped hand and power tools specifically for removing grout. You can ask at your local store or check out the tools in the tile department.
