Usually happens when the chain is too long. You want it just long enough so there is just a slight sag in it when closed. You may have to experiment with hooking it into different holes in the arm (if the arm has multiple holes; most do. And make sure there is no twist in the chain when you hook it on the arm.

Use nylon mason's twine. (Never tried but should work.)

Update, I put builders marker twine (nylon) where chain goes, no more problem, now I just need to learn a good knot. Last knot slipped and had to retie

Wonder if you could use a steel leader like for fishing at the right length if that doesn't work out ?

Seriously? No, sorry, I'm still PO'd about something else.

Hmmm lets see. Fishing swivel, length of nylon twine as mentioned (I've replaced the whole chain with that and it works fine.), just replace the chain with SS (some are actually chrome plated!), use one with a large snap hook on the end.

Quick is either nylon twine used in a short loop, or even poly/nylon fishing line.
