Installing pop-up drain - plumbers putty?
I'm redoing a bathroom and bought a pop up drain for a porcelain undermount sink. The pop up has an upper and lower rubber gasket. Do I use plumbers putty with the upper or is the rubber gasket all I need?
To be clear, it is an angled rubber flexible gasket and not a hard piece of plastic (though there is also a hard plastic gasket for the lower part).

Here's a diagram of a pop up. The plastic washer is a friction ring that goes on the bottom between the bottom of the rubber washer and the nut used to tighten. The rubber washer is called a basin washer or a mack washer.
There is no washer for the top flange (usually) and the top flange seal only keeps water in the bowl, not prevent leaks below.
The flange gets a bead of plumbers putty or silicone.

Did you read the instructions? They are pretty clear in assembly order. And from experience, if they say use caulk under the flange...don't! Either regular putty or the non staining type depending on sink material. The caulk is a royal PITA. Putty has been used for decades and works just fine.

Thanks for the response. This drain definitely has an upper gasket. Here is a picture. It came with no instructions so I am not sure if I should just use the upper gasket alone, use the gasket with plumber's putty, or not use the upper gasket and use plumber's putty instead.

Is this a push pull type with no overflow and no rod/lever?
Please post a picture of the sink, showing drain hole and faucet holes from above and a picture of the drain hole from below.

It looks like your pop up body doesn't have overflow holes, you might need a new pop up assembly.
Unscrew the flange and apply putty, about 1/2" bead
Flip the bottom nut so the flat surface is facing up
Apply Teflon paste to the male threads where the mack washer will sit (mack washers will leak from the internal diameter)
Also apply paste to the 1.25" tailpiece threads where it screws into bottom of pop up body.

Thanks for the detail. There is an overflow hole (actually 2 rectangular cutouts), but it isn't showing in the picture.
