Replacing PVC Before Drain

Is there a concern when cutting pipe before the P-trap? I had to do that when I replaced my sink, and the smell was not pleasant. It didn't seem like there was much I could do to plug it, because I had to reinstall everything, including a new trap. I'm pulling out the ABS under a bathroom sink, so I'm going to be doing the same thing. If possible, I'd like to minimize the sewer gas, etc. I'm more concerned about health issues, and I don't know whether it's a problem with short-term exposure.

Not an issue for that short a time.
Once the traps installed and filled with water, no more gas.
