Plumbers Putty on Shower Enclosure?

I recently replaced the spout on my tub/shower enclosure. When I took it apart I noticed a gap around the copper pipe coming into the tub and I thought it might be a good idea to seal it with plumbers putty. After I got done, I noticed on the plumbers putty container it said not to use on plastics. I'm not exactly sure what my tub is made of, but I assume it is possibly acrylic or fiberglass. Is there any reason that my tub falls into the same category? Why would they recommend not using it? Would I be better off using something else (maybe a stain-free putty?) or using nothing at all?

Thanks in advance for your replies.
