Are My Toilet Tanks Really Leaking?

I was complaining to my water company about our bill being too high recently and they said I should use food coloring in the top of the toilet tanks to see if there is a leak down in the bowl. They said if the dye runs down into the bowl, we have a leak and it's wasting water down the waste spout that runs into the floor and outside. I did try this on all three of my toilets. One was severely colored, one was just slightly colored and the other was not colored at all.

Is this indeed a sign I have found a source of wasted water? If so, what's the best way to fix that?

Yes, that is indeed a sign of wasting water. Water is supposed to sit in the tank until you flush, and NOT seep past the flapper. You most likely need to replace the flapper in the offending toilets, then check again. Here's some youtubes describing the procedure:

We've seen tenants get water bills in the high hundreds of dollars because of this. Now our leases specifically say no bleach tablets in the tank.

Common problem and a common diagnostic procedure. I always tell my customers to do the food coloring test. But please do not use yellow!
