Can't mount garbage disposal with splash guard

Long story short... I have a garbage disposal with no splash guard. It's a new house and the disposal was reused in a renovation so I'm not sure if it ever had one. No problem, I bought one at home depot and should be an easy fix. I took out the disposal and the guard snaps in place just fine. However, it makes the connection so tight, I can't secure the disposal to the mount. If I take off the splash guard, I can get it to mount no problem. So I'm wondering the following...

Are there any tricks or adjustments I can make to get it to mount easier? Do I need a different splash guard or a whole new disposal? Any suggestions is appreciated. Thanks!

I had this happen once on an Insinkerator.... turned out I had bought the wrong splash guard. Looked like the right one , seemed to fit on the disposal just fine, but it made it too tight to install on my particular model. The correct splash guard for the correct model was all I needed.

Turns out "universal" fit isn't always universal.
