Repairing three piece shower faucet

I think this is a Moen but not sure. 3 piece. Been leaking for years. Does the plastic part here pull out or twist out or what? Can I put in generic replacements? I want to replace both handle cartridges ..does the middle have anything to replace?

There needs to be a way to hold the cartridge in place. Did you slide a clip up and remove it ?

no I havent looked deeper. Is a clip common? Is it possible it is a compression fit?
also the outlet faucet is what leaks. or the shower head if I switch to that. should I replace some stuff in there too?
btw good job on the pic edit. It wasnt near that clear on my computer.

I was trying to find that cartridge and was not successful. The cartridges are press fit and usually hard to get out but there needs to be some type of lock to keep it in. Typically on Moen it's a clip you lift up. I don't see one on your cartridge. Possibly it's not a Moen or it's an older one.

Why do you think it's a Moen? Can you show us pictures of everything with the knobs back in place? If you call Moen they'll help you identify it if it is one of theirs.

it might not be a Moen. I am going to put in an access hatch on the other side of that wall and I will be able to see everything then.

Doesn't look like Moen to me, they have been pretty standard for a long time. Looking at your picture, as others have noted, don't know what is holding that cartridge in.
