What Toilet Size

I am getting ready to replace an existing toilet in the “water closet” of my master bathroom. The space is limited there. I am trying to determine what size toilet to purchase (I prefer an elongated bowl, which is what is currently in place). Since the flange is not visible to me because of the existing toilet, I am assuming that I can determine the rough in by measuring the distance from the wall to the bolt that is sticking up from the floor through the base of the existing toilet. Wouldn’t you know it, the rough in appears to be closer to 13 inches, making me wonder if I need a 12” or 14” rough in toilet. The existing toilet is 27 inches from the wall to the tip of base in the front of toilet

The standard rough in is 12" from the wall so you should be good to go with an elongated bowel. Be sure to measure the new toilet to be certain on all clearances and save yourself from having to return it. I hate returning purchases, I would rather go to the dentist.

So, if the center of the flange is actually 13" and the toilet is a 12" in rough in, then the toilet should set out 1" farther from the wall than what is shown in the specifications, correct?

Maybe, it depends on the way your replacement toilet is made, it could set out an inch or set the same as the old one. Either way an elongated should work just fine, again measure all the particulars to be sure.

If you're cramped for room why do you want an elongated toilet? Get a standard round and give yourself a little more "elbow" room. The flange distance is standard. I'll also suggest the higher type in the 15" to 16" range as opposed to the 14" high seat.

The flange distance is standard.

Yep, either 12" or 14". I would also recommend the taller toilet sometimes called comfort height and sometimes listed as ADA height.
