Can I put plumbers putty under caulk?

Hello,

I usually put new caulk around my bathtub every 5 years because the caulk develops some mold and turns from white to grey color and many places.
I need to re-caulk the bathtub this year again. The gap between my bathtub and tiles is too deep, so I have to put at least two layers of caulk. It requires a lot of caulk and take more time. Is it possible to put plumbers putty as a first layer and then, on top of it, put the caulk? Is it going to work?

Thank you very much for your answers.

You "could" but it would be better if you used foam backer rod.

I would only be using bath sealants that say they are mold resistant.

I would NOT use plumbers putty. It's basically an oil based clay. You'll probably get oil residue on the joint trying to install it which could cause adhesion problems for the top layer of caulk.

Silicone or polyurethane caulk should adhere ok to the plumber's putty.

As PD and Xslpr, said it's a bad idea. In addition it will very likely stain the grout and possibly stain any tile that might seep under the glaze.

Get it at your home store. Its the only Vinyl product I am aware of.
