Will removing splat from queen anne chair weaken it?

I'm reupholstering my old Queen Anne chairs. I want a more flexible backrest so I want to remove the splat on the chair. Will this damage the integrity of the chair or would it be fine if I added webbing to the chair?

I would think it would weaken the back significantly. It's a major member in most chairs...unless it is purely free floated. Even then...it's more than decorative to at least some extent.

Wait, is this an "exposed" back, or more of a wingback with upholstered arms and back?

I'm thinking something along the lines of this but maybe not as fancy:

If so, I'd think it might break when someone leans back if that's not there anymore. Maybe post a pic of your chair.

This is almost exactly my chair: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/fuo/6694246164.html

It's not as sturdy as what Shadeladie posted but I'm not sure how much of a part the backrest plays into its structure. If I add jute webbing to support the backrest, similar to picture #6 in the link below, would it work?
