Question What's this buildup on my shower tile?

Mind taking a look at the picture below? Our shower is less than a year old and has some pretty cheap natural stone tile. In a couple places along the wall edges, there is some kind of buildup - it's hard as a rock and no amount of cleaner or scrubbing will remove it.

Any thoughts as to what this might be? We're thinking it might be a grout issue or perhaps the tile could be breaking down?

Interested to hear thoughts from the group. And before you ask, yes, we do clean our shower regularly.

Have you tried CLR or LimeAway? Looks like mineral build up. Does water pool in that area?

Looks like one horrible tile job and iron in the water.
Had the water tested?
City or well water?
Got a water softener?
