Can I Use Glue to Tiles in Kitchen Floor? What Glue?

Transition between kitchen tile and living room hardwood floor:

I thought if I use hardiebacker plug thinset plus porcelain tile in kitchen, the total thickness in kitchen will approach 3/4" which would be much higher than the level of hardwood floor (Lauzon engineered hardwood 7/16" thick) in the living room.

I don't like T molding or threshold molding for transition. In order to lay tile and hardwood floor to even thickness level, can i just use some type of glue to glue a 7/16" thickness tile to the subfloor directly which is plywood on a raised foundation, w/o using hardiebacker ?

 

No. ceramic needs a decoupler. You can use Ditra which is thinner. If you glue ceramic to plywood it will crack.

 

The last thing you worry about when installing tiles is height. Doing the job right usually means that floor becomes higher than those around it.

 

Thanks for your input. Thought about Ditra which is 1/8 thickness, helps a bit. If my porcelain tile is 7/16 plus thinset, which will be easily in about 11/16" high vs. wood floor 7/16"
