Cleaning shower tile grout after install

Had a guy take out our old insert and replace with tile. He did a good job except didn't clean the grout well in the cubbyholes that he made. It's dark tiles, so the sloppy grout cleaning shows bad.
We've used steel wool, but still not really cleaning it up good.
Any suggestions?

Is it a glaze or a gob of grout? If the latter you'll probably need to chip it off. Pics would be helpful.

Haze can be buffed out but anything else will need to be removed. Any chance of getting the contractor back to fix his sloppy work?
