How to properly waterproof a horizontal shower window niche?
Our shower consists of a cast iron tub basin with tiled walls up 3/4 of the wall. It ialso has a tiled horizontal window niche. Without removing the tub, we are going to replace the tile. I first want to know how to do the horizontal niche. We're going with cementboard and redguard.
1. Is the proper waterproofing/moisture system in the horizontal niche:
stud>cementboard>redguard (2coats)>tile ?? Is a plastic membrane needed anywhere?
2. Would you do the same for the vertical walls or only do one coat of RG?
3.. How important is using thinset to embed fiberglass tape at the seams and change of planes? Can you get by with relying on the tapes self adhesion?
4. Are special screws needed for the boards?
Thank you
