Replacing Faux Brick Backsplash

I have an older home and it currently has a Faux half brick type backsplash, its not terrible, but I just want to upgrade to some newer tile. They are a pain in the ass to get off and leave a bunch of that "mortar" still on the wall all rough. Am I better off just cutting it all out and putting up new cement board and starting over? Or can I just get it as smooth as possible after I remove them all and tile over the previous plaster? Im not afraid of extra work, but obviously don't prefer it.

Thanks for any input!

I would cut it all out and replace the substrate. Cement board isn't needed for a backsplash. Regular drywall would be fine. While you're at it, add additional electrical outlets if needed, and run electrical for some undercabinet lighting if you so desire.

Thanks, kind of thought that too. Might be a little pain to cut it out but definitely possible. Good idea with the outlets and cabinet lighting. I will consider it for sure. I also needed a path to run wire for a new circuit for the wiring of a new above range microwave anyways...

Thanks
