Subway tile trowel recommendations

Subway tile trowel recommendations

Hi-

Can someone recommend the correct size/type of trowel I will want to install 3" x 6" subway tile for a backsplash?

Usually the thinset you are using has recommendations for the notch size. My guess would be 1/4" x 1/4" x 1/4". The recommendations are just that recommendations. I have gone to a taller than recommended notch when the surface underneath was not even and I wanted more wiggle room to get all the tiles uniform. And, when the surface below is good and I want to minimize excess thinset squishing up between the tiles I've gone with a smaller than recommended notch.

1/4" square is too big for thin subway tile. I recommend a3/16" V-notch trowel.
