Remove built-in desk and shelves, replace with drywall cost

I wish to remove this built-in desk and shelves:

Assuming I can demo/remove them myself:

1) How hard would it be to make the resulting surface paintable? Could I do this myself?

2) If not, how much should it cost to have someone do it?

It depends on if there is Sheetrock behind it. It could be the unit is against bare studs. Does the back of the bays look like plywood or Sheetrock?

Not only will you be dealing with the wall covering, but what do you plan on doing with the flooring, should it be cut to the cabinet, rather than run under it? Is the desk flush with the wall above it? Do you plan on leaving it offset like it is?

Most of the new construction houses I've painted that had 'built ins' the cabinet/shelves were installed after drywall so the odds are there is finished drywall behind it BUT as Larry mentioned, the odds are the flooring does not extend under the built in.
