Is this asbestos?

I am demo-ing my bathroom and behind the vanity tile there is : sheetrock, some brown composite material, then sheetrock, then pipes.

Is the brown composite material asbestos or maybe some sound deadening material?

Why would a builder put sheetrock over this brown material?

The building is an old loft style building built in the 1920s. It was converted to condos in 1983.

Thanks

But should be sure!

If the time frame that that material was installed is 1983 then it would not be asbestos.
Its use was discontinued many years before that.

Is that on every wall or just the party wall between units?

The wall with the brown material does separate my unit from another unit.

I've only opened up two walls. The other wall was internal to my apartment and there was only cement board behind there.

I wonder if maybe it is cellotex sandwiched between 2 layers of drywall.

I randomly met a nyc contractor yesterday and ran the asbestos question past him.

He said asbestos won't be in wall materials but will be wrapped around pipes as insulation. Not seeing the latter for any of the pipes I have exposed.
