Question Prep all for tile backsplash

I’m in a condo built in 1964. The walls are a combination of what looks like 3/8” gypsum against the studs and 3/8” plaster on the other side. I removed a tile backsplash in the kitchen and want to replace it with another tile backsplash. The removal of the old tile took about 1/16” of paint and surface off the plaster side of the wall. What preparation is necessary to the wall before new tile can go up?

Personally I would probably just smooth things up with a thin coat of setting compound (hot mud), followed by a light sanding. Just so that it's smooth for the thinset and tile.

I would inlay 1/4 " cement backer board attached to he stud. Check the distance to the existing plaster to see if the depth is compatible with the new tile. Most likely, it will be short. Shim the studs before installation of the backerboard so this time it is at least flush.

If the damage is as minor as you state you can easily just put new tile up without any prep work.

Use a quality mortar, nothing premixed, and the mortar will simply fill any gaps in the drywall!
