Replacing old water heater

I have a 25 year old 40 gal water heater that finally rusted out. After wrestling with a stuck gate valve, I finally got it to close. I hooked a hose up to the drain **** - editors are apparently obsessed with a certain meaning of that word, certainly not the one intended here - at the bottom of the water heater. But can't budge any of the connections on top - the cold inlet or hot outlet. Any tricks to getting these loose?
A friend is bringing a new water heater tomorrow, so I want to get this one out soon.

If you haven't been routinely been draining your tank..... the drainc*ock may be clogged shut.

I don't usually reuse the fittings on the top of the tank. I'll take a pipe cutter and cut the hot and cold lines and then replace the fittings.

Agree with PJ. Those old valve will not be usable after 25 years. You'll want to get ball valves instead. Consider Sharkbite fittings and save yourself a lot of time.
