Hot water heater without Nipple

My hot water heater started leaking - possible from the compression fit connecting water line to the hot water heater. After opening up the connection, the nipple was in a corroded state and just came out. I replaced the compression fit. The leak has stopped.
Is it OK to continue without the nipple, or is it recommended to change the hot water heater?
Thanks
Manny

Did you use dielectric nipples? If not they will corrode last the last ones.
