Water heater element burnout

My water heater has begun burning out the lower element or thermostat (not sure which) within mere days of replacement. I'm not sure what else I can do other than replacing the water heater (which I can't afford). Please help.

Checked the voltage?
Once the element was changed, did you turn on the incoming water and open up the hot side of a faucet and let it run until the water was running full flow before hitting the breaker?
Checked for loose wires on the thermostat, and breaker?
