Salt vs salt-free softener/conditioner?

Has anyone used both systems? Which do you prefer? I'm leaning towards salt. I think the salt systems, assuming you buy a good softener, is time-tested and infallible. I've read how the salt-free systems work, or are supposed to work. I've read many comments about how some people weren't satisfied with the salt-free systems. I really don't mind buying salt or potassium every couple/few months. So, all else equal (operating costs, etc.), only considering performance, what do you prefer?

I have not personally used a salt free system but have installed several. I've done a followup and tested the water only to fine no difference. So of the comments where not good for the salt free systems.

A water softener works by a simple process of ion exchange.

There are a lot of magic non-salt devices sold out there but if you do your due diligence to read the non-biased reviews they simply do not work.

A properly sized water softener will provide many years worth of service with the worst part having to refill with salt pellets.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like a good salt system is the way to go.
