Installing New Water Softener

Hello All:
I will be installing a new water softener in a few weeks. I am very confident about my abilities to do this as I have done plumbing and electrical as a homeowner/diy'er. I have sweated/glued pipe for indoor and outdoor plumbing and created new outlets and tapped into old for electrical. I want to have the spigot softened(just for car washes), but have the ability to revert to hard water for other uses. I have a few questions if anyone could help me out. I'm including a few photos with this post.

What set up would I need to fasion a softened spigot and go back to hard for it?

Would I need to position the softener closer to the main for this or keep it at the water heater?

My thought is that you would have 2 spigots, one at the main where you could pull out unsoftened water, then one after the softher where you could get soft water.
