Replacement cartridges for old Sears sediment filters

My house has a pair of cartridge style water filters on the main water line. They are labeled Sears Water Filter, Sediment Removal Type, with a model number of 423416. I have never changed the filters, and I have no idea what I'm looking for in terms of replacement cartridges. I Googled for that model number, and it doesn't look like it's made anymore.

Can I just measure the size of the housing and order based on filter size? Or are these things more specific than that?

Typ the filters are standard, as you state I would take one out and measure!
