A little more info would really be helpful. What are you installing? Brand / model.

V/N could be virtual network... having to do with a meter connection for example.

This is a really great question. I enjoyed trying to answer it. Given that the question was posted under water softeners, I figured out that's what you were installing. I was able to conclude you're installing a Isobar control valve for a PROVECTR system. I even found the instructions under "Installation Procedure, Location of V/N", which say:
The V/N will be installed in the water supply line between the water pump and in home pressure tank. The filter tank must be located after the pressure tank but before, for example, a water softener or water heater. Because the system begins precipitating contaminants at the V/N, the shorter and straighter the run from that location to the filter, the better the system will operate.
Not bad, but I have no better idea what V/N is than you do except possibly Venturi nozzle.
