Steel Angle - Manufacturing film

I bought some angle steel from Lowe's and it is covered with a silver-grey film that gets on everything it touches. How is the best way to clean this; soap & water, mineral spirits, etc? I am going to paint this and need a clean surface.

Usually the metal (iron) products you get from the home improvement stores are covered with a light coating of oil to keep them from rusting. Any degreaser should work. Mineral spirits are ok.

I normally wipe them down with whatever thinner I have handy prior to coating them with an oil based primer.

Just keep cleaning until you rags come away clean. Stronger solvents like MEK and laquer thinner work faster but anything that cuts oil and grease will work.
