New member with old well
I'm new here so here goes. I got an old well that has not been in service for 8 years. It's an 8 in casing. I pulled the old pump but honey bees had taken it over. The old pump had 170 foot of pipe but now I can only get down around 60 feet dropping a large weight. There are a lot of dead bees down there.

Welcome to the forums.
Your title was a little unclear so I took care of it.
Are you trying to get this well back in service ?
Does the pump look to be in good shape ?
It will need to be tested after being unused for so long.
So tells us more.

The 170' depth of your casing presents some serious problems in cleaning it out because you can only "suck" water up by 2 gravities, or about 33' (at Sea Level) before it would rather vaporize (boil) at that low pressure (vacuum) instead of coming up the suction pipe as a liquid.
Somehow, you have to dislodge the debris and then position some kind of trash pump down at the bottom to "push" the water and debris up to the top.

How did you conclude that the Well is 170' deep ?
When you pulled the old pump, did you also bring up about 145-150' of pipe ?
Here in Vermont, we have a registry at Public Health that contains the statistics on all wells drilled since the 1970s; but not all well drillers comply with the filing requirements.
The Registry contains data on the casing type, casing length, well depth, underlying soil/rock structure, static water level, original pump HP, pump depth, and GPM.
You're probably in a more sophisticated place, and should also have a similar registry; your profile doesn't indicate where you or this project are located.
