Sump drain strainer basket

We have a drain at the bottom of our basement egress stairs that leads to the sump pump (First picture). To keep leaves from covering the original flat cover, I put a domed cover on it (Second picture). I was also concerned about smaller debris getting in there, so I put a strainer under the dome (Third picture). Works great, but the strainer can get easily clogged so I've got to keep a close eye on it. My question is, do I need to worry about the small stuff (dirt, pieces of algae, bugs, etc.) that the strainer is catching? Do these things hurt the pump, or can it handle them just fine? If not, I'll probably remove the strainer, since if I miss that it's clogged, water can quickly start filling the stairwell and come under the door.

Most sump pumps can handle small bits. Try it for a while without the fine strainer and keep a close eye on the sump until your confident that it works OK.
