Closed septic system maintenance

My wife and I are attempting to buy a house. This house has a recently installed closed septic system featuring 3 1000 gallon tanks with no leach field. I was wondering how often do they need to be pumped or maintained since they don't have a leach field. I am unfamiliar with this sort of system. The property is quite rocky. Tha ks for the input.

I'd think fairly often. While I'm sure not all of your monthly water usage would wind up in the tanks, that would be a good way to gauge it. Doesn't the seller have a record of how often it's pumped?

They installed it prior to us looking at the house. It has never been used . We are trying to find out because if it needs to be pumped every couple months that would be a financial issue.

Try calling a few septic pumper places and see what they have to say about that type of system. Other than a part time use cabin I don't recall ever knowing anyone that just had a sewage storage tank.

hi Cp –

I think mark alluded to this but I think those types of systems are usually used for part time living. I think the estimated usage number of gallons per person per day is somewhere around 75 ( that might be high) but you can see with 3000 gallons storage you would need to have that pumped probably at least once per month.

Is this a septic system or just holding tanks?

Here is an article that might be of interest. I would think that the seller’s agent would be able to clarify for you, but I’m not sure.

It's pretty hard to have a septic system without a leach field or some type of treatment area. I would definetely get to the bottom of it as it dramatically affects how you have to deal with it and the expense of operating it. You might have an engineered system that has specific maintenance requirements or just holding tanks that would require regular pumping which can get expensive fast.
