crawl Adding a wall for your crawl space can be done relatively easily. All you need are the right materials, a little know-how, and the ambition to get the job done. Adding a wall to a crawl space will create a separate crawl space area or enclose your existing area. Step 1 - Measure the Area Use your tape measure to get the dimensions of the crawl space. Measure both the height and width to determine the size of the wall you are going to build. Write the dimensions down to take with you to the store. Step 2 - Purchase the Needed Lumber Using the dimensions you have recorded, you need to purchase enough 2x4-inch boards to complete the project. Lumber can be purchased from your local lumber yard or at many home improvement stores. Kiln-dried or air-dried lumber shrinks the least over time. It is more stable than other lumber, thus making it the best choice for building walls. Each stick of dimensional lumber will be labeled. Look for KD or AD and get grade 2 or better to ensure quality. You will need two horizontal pieces, one piece for each end, and one-piece every 14-inches to place as a stud for support. Step 3 - Grab the Saw and Get Cutting Be sure to follow proper safety guidelines when using your saw. It is especially important to wear safety eyewear when working with power tools. Measure the 2x4-inch boards accurately and cut them carefully. The wall studs need to be the same length as the end beams. Step 4 - Begin Putting it All Together If you are creating a long wall, map out your beams first. Lay the top and sole plates. Measure and mark every 14-inches to ensure proper placement of the studs. Now that you have the location of the studs marked, place the lumber. With your makeshift wall built, it is time to begin nailing. The easiest way to do so is to nail the four pieces of the frame together first. Then move on to the inner studs. Attach the lumber with the finishing nails, a hammer, and your own strength. Step 5 - Position the Wall and Secure it Now that your wall has been built, it is time to put it into its new home. Lift it from its side into a standing position. Carefully maneuver it into its final resting place. Using a level, ensure your wall is perfectly vertical. If you find any spots where the top plate is not snug against the ceiling, slip thin wood shims under the soleplate to slightly raise it. Once you are happy with the way the wall is sitting, load up the nail gun and secure the soleplate. Drive one 10d nail into each stud bay. Place nails every 12 or 16-inches along the length of the end studs. Finally, secure the top plate and you have successfully framed your crawlspace.space
