3 Plunge Router Repair Tips

The plunge router is a tool used by many people in the woodworking industry. The plunge router is usually used to cut wood at the middle, rather than at the edges, and also has a number of different router tips which can be changed, depending upon the needs of the wood or the cutting design. If you are having problems with your router, then you may need to check that you have the right bit in place, or you may need to dismantle the router and check that all the parts are working properly. In order to repair the plunge router, you will need some basic home improvement tools such as a screwdriver.

1 - Check the Power Supply

The power connection is a big problem for most power tools, and if you are experiencing difficulty with your plunge router, then checking your power supply is probably the first thing that you should do. If you have a plug-in router, then remove it from the connection, and check both the plug and the socket. Unscrew the back of the plug, and check the connections. If the fuse needs replacing, do that, and then try the tool again. If you have a battery router, then you should remove this power source from the router, and check all of the connections. You may also wish to examine the charge from the battery using a voltmeter, or simply replace it for another. If the router does not work after you have replaced the battery, ensure that you remove all potential sources of power from the tool before trying other repairs.

2 - Check the Motor

Another source of problems is the plunge router motor. This can become worn out over time, and you could need to replace the belt mechanism. You should also add a drop or two of oil to the motor, as lack of lubrication can prevent the motor from turning. Once you have checked or replaced the belt and added some more oil to the right place on the motor (usually marked with an arrow), then you should be able to start the tool again. If it still does not work, then you will need to try something else.

3 - Checking the Blade

You should next look at the cutting blade, which is attached to the cutter head. As plunge routers work with wood, the blade and the mechanism can sometimes become jammed by chips or splinters of wood. Regular cleaning should prevent this from happening, but a splinter of wood in the mechanism can stop it from working. Use your screwdriver, or a pair of needle-nose pliers, to remove any pieces of wood that you can see from the router, and if necessary, unscrew the parts and clean thoroughly before reassembling. Once you have cleaned all of your plunge router, check it to see whether it is working again.
