3 Types of Hay Feeders Explained

Hay feeders are needed in order to keep your horse fed during the months where the hay can become rotted. You will find that there are several different types of hay feeders. It is important that you do your homework so that you will have a good idea of what type of hay feeder will work best for your horse and for you.

1. Ground

When it comes to the most popular types of hay feeders, the ground ones are it. They are also the safest. Because a horse is unique in the way that it digests its food and eats, it is best for it to eat with its head down. This is why the ground feeders are typically the best for your horse. A ground feeder is typically how a horse eats anyway so you will not have to worry about them getting used to anything different. The main difference is that the ground feeder will have a bottom so that the horse will not have to worry about coming into contact with the ground. Should the hay come into contact with the ground, worms can get in their food and it can also grow mildew which will make it bad. If there is bad weather and the ground becomes wet, this can ruin the hay for your horse. It is important that the bottom that is on the ground feeder is extremely durable.

2. Hanging

A hanging hay feeder is a very convenient way to feed your horse. You will find that they can be brought along whenever your horse is in a trailer or traveling anywhere. They are easy to fill and can also be easy for your horse as well. While they are not as safe as a ground feeder for your horse’s digestive track, they are still safe enough where your horse will be able to use it. Whenever your horse is in a stall, then this is the best method used to feed them. It is important that a hanging hay feeder is hung high enough up so that your horse will have to reach up somewhat so that they can pull the hay out. If it is not, then they can get a hoof or a leg inside of the feeder and become injured.

3. Round Bales

Whenever there is no grass available or whenever you are on vacation, this is the best method to feed your horse. A round bale is something that is not very easy to move and is extremely large. It is best if the round bale feeder that you use is one where the hay is placed along the top. This type of feeder is one that is most often used by people that travel a lot or have longer stretches of time where their horse is left unattended. This is slightly different from a ground feeder because it is much bigger and cannot be moved. It is not as low to the ground as a ground feeder and is something that can hold a lot of hay and keep it safe for a longer period of time.
