3 Ways to Refurbish a Clawfoot Tub

If you are fortunate enough to own a clawfoot bathtub, you already know how luxurious it makes your bathroom. Clawfoot tubs are made of such sturdy construction they can be refurbished. This sometimes takes some elbow grease, but the rewards you’ll reap from having a shiny new looking tub are worth it! Here are three ways to refurbish a clawfoot tub from a simple spruce up to a complete refinish.

Thorough Cleaning

Sometimes, all you need to refurbish your clawfoot tub is to get on the floor and give it some extra care. You will want to use a soft scrubbing pad so you do not harm the finish. Using bath soap that is clear or white, or clear dish liquid, massage into the inside of the tub first to get it clean. Mix some of the soap with water in a small pail, and scrub the outside.

Take a toothbrush and clean the feet of your tub. If you can get under your tub, clean any debris with a feather cloth and follow by cleaning the bottom with your soap mixture. If you have stains that are not coming off, use baking soda mixed with water in equal parts to scrub the stains away. If this does not remove them, you will have to use chlorine bleach. Apply it with a sponge and let it work for 30 minutes before rinsing.

If the outside of your tub is the main issue, you can cover it with tile, or paint it with acrylic urethane enamel paint. This paint is toxic so be sure you have good ventilation while working with it, and wear a mask and safety glasses. Hopefully, your tub looks new again, but if this doesn’t work you may have to try a refurbishing kit.

Refurbishing Kit

If your tub is stained, you will need a refurbishing kit, such as Tabby, which costs about $30. This kit has everything you will need to refinish your tub, and it even comes in different colors if you are ready for a change. A kit will come with all you need to do a total makeover, but be aware that there are strong chemicals involved, and it is not easy. If you are not up to this challenge, then you may want to splurge for the expense of a professional for the job.

Professional Restoration

A professional restoration of your tub can be done in one day so you can just relax and enjoy your new tub. The expense is different for each area of the country, so you will want to get estimates from three contractors. Make sure they are licensed and have a lot of experience in this arena. Ask for references before you make a final decision.

It’s worth refurbishing a clawfoot tub because they are collectible antiques that will bring beauty to your bathroom for as long as you live in your home.
