4 Natural Pest Control Methods for Getting Rid of Spiders
Natural pest control is the safest way to rid your home of pests like spiders or other unwanted creepy crawlers. A lot of people are afraid of spiders, plus in some areas there are poisonous spiders like the brown recluse or black widow. Natural pest control is also non-toxic to people and pets, so it can be used in homes with small children. Here are some methods you can use to get rid of spiders.
1. Wash Windows with Ammonia and Kerosene
Wash your windows on both the inside and the outside with a mixture of ammonia and water. Let the windows get dry and then use newspapers dipped in kerosene to rub down the whole window, including the frame. The kerosene will evaporate, but it leaves a film that spiders don’t like.
2. Get Rid of What Attracts Spiders
Spiders usually are in a house because they want a home, food, and breeding space. If you get rid of these items, then they will either leave your home or die naturally. One kind of natural pest control method is to do things like get rid of the other bugs in your house that spiders may eat. Seal up or repair cracks, crevices, or holes in your screens so they can’t get in, and put bug repellant light bulbs in your outside light sockets so as not to attract insects.
Make sure your house is free of dust and dirt in places like behind your stove or refrigerator or in corners, as that is the kind of place spiders like to hide and build their webs. If you don’t give them a place they feel comfortable and safe, then they won’t be building their home or breeding in your home. Vacuuming often can help with this.
3. Peppermint and Spearmint Oil
You can make a natural pest control from peppermint or spearmint oils. Just put water and a few drops of the oil in a bottle and spray this into areas spiders like, such as window sills, behind appliances, near outside doors or windows, or anywhere you have seen spiders. It smells nice to people, but the spiders hate it so they will be repelled from wherever you spray it.
4. Garlic Repels Spiders
Garlic cloves are another natural pest control option. Just put cloves of garlic into a spray container of plain water. Just like above, spray it where you either have seen spiders or where they might enter your home, like windows, doors, dark places, and in other areas.
You can also try grinding up some leaves from a tomato plant and putting that into a spray bottle of plain water with a spoonful of cornstarch and using wherever you have seen spiders or think they could try to go.
