Spring is the perfect time to work on sprucing up the interior of your home. The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, and the BBQ and party season is just around the corner. Here are four spring DIYs for the home. Try one, or all of them, to freshen your home up for the season.
1. Bring the Outdoors In
Flowers are just starting to bud in the spring, making it a perfect time to bring the outdoors inside. If you have flowering shrubs or trees in your yard, consider cutting a few branches to bring inside. When placed in a tall vase of water, they will bloom early. Forsythia, dogwood, and apple are examples of branches you can force bloom.
Don’t have any branches? You can also force bloom bulbs in pots of soil. Daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, and paperwhite narcissus are all beautiful flowers that will add a splash of color to your home. You can purchase the bulbs and planting supplies at your local home improvement or garden store.
2. Modify Your Furnishings
Another way to freshen up your home for spring is to modify your furnishings. Consider rotating your existing furniture based on the rooms you use most. An unused dresser might make a perfect storage piece for a sunroom to store seasonal table and flatware for spring and summer parties. Or, change a room up by rotating the furniture within the room. Try placing a bed or sofa in a different location. Both pieces of furniture work well underneath or facing a window. You might also want to look into slipcovers for upholstered furniture. Slipcovers are a great way to update a piece of furniture, old or new. They come is a variety of prints and solid colors, so you’ll be sure to find one that fits your décor and style.
3. Do a Spring Clean and Purge
The spring season is a time of new beginnings. What better way to embrace this theme than to do a spring clean or purge? We all have items that no longer fit us, or that we no longer use. Take time to go through each room and bag up what you no longer want, use, or need. These items can later be donated, and you can potentially receive a tax deduction.
When you’ve purged each room, consider doing a deep clean, which is more than just dusting and vacuuming. Wash all of your bedding and curtains. Look into having your carpet and upholstered furniture steam cleaned. Wash the inside glass of windows and vacuum or wash the screens. You should also consider fully cleaning the interior of your appliances. Microwaves, ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers all accumulate grime, dirt, and potentially mold over time.
4. Consider Paint
If you are willing to put in some time and get your hands dirty, paint is a great way to update and freshen a space for spring. If you have dark or dirty walls, consider a fresh coat to brighten them up. There are so many colors to choose from, and light colors are perfect for the season. If you can’t decide on a paint color, you can always choose white, which comes in various shades of cool and warm tones. Then, you can use your accessories to add pops of color to the room. If you don’t want to paint your walls, you may want to think about painting a piece of furniture. Adding a new color to a dresser or wood chair can bring life to the piece, especially if you use a bright or unique color.
These are just a few examples of ways to freshen up your home for spring. Try one and you might just be inspired to try all four.
