4 Tips for Pulling a Moldboard Plow

Size
Size will have a lot to do with the way that the moldboard is pulled. You will find that there are models that have anywhere to 2 to 12 bottoms. They also have a 12 inch to a 22 inch width of cut. They can plow as deep as 14 inches. They will need to be attached with a 3 point hitch or simply be towed. Most of the models will have wheels that are furrow and the plows themselves are lowered and raised hydraulically. The bigger the size, the more horsepower will be needed. You will find that a lot of horsepower will be needed even with the smallest moldboard.
Soil
The horsepower requirements will also depend a lot on the type of soil that you will be working with. The plows themselves have bottoms that are large and curved. This is the actual moldboard that will attach to a frame. The shears that go along the bottom of the moldboard are curved and large wings that will turn the soil. If the soil is especially rough, then the horsepower that is needed to pull it will go up significantly. If you happen to have a rocky soil, then you will not be able to use a moldboard. The rocky soil could easily damage the moldboard so you should be aware of the type of soil that you are working with before you begin to pull the moldboard over it. In more difficult soils however, there are models that provide a reset mechanism. This mechanism will allow the bottom to rise over any obstruction and then it will return back into the original position. Basically, a moldboard works best whenever it is used on a cropland that is clean tilled and has a high amount of residue.

These types of plows do not have very high power requirements. Because of this, they provide little crop residue that is on the surface of the soil. They are no longer used as often as they used to be when it comes to row crop farming. It is typical that they are used whenever there is an abandoned farmland and the area needs to be prepared for grass seeding.
