Independence Day is one of many people’s most favorite holiday of the year. Adults and kids alike look forward to barbecue, fireworks, and spending the day poolside. Often though, people throwing the party look forward to it with dread. It doesn’t need to be that way. Here, we offer simple tips and tricks for the a perfect Fourth of July party.

Be Prepared

Nothing frazzles your nerves more than to have to rush out at party time and pick up items that you’ve forgotten or overlooked. A week ahead, sit down and decide what to have for your barbecue, and list everything down to the napkins. Keep fare simple—hot dogs and hamburgers are a traditional 4th of July serving. Be sure to have enough condiments on hand, and if you barbecue with charcoal, ensure there is plenty, along with charcoal starter. If you have a gas grill, ensure that the tank is full. If your gathering is large, enlist the help of another barbecue expert in your family and friends circle to assist. Nothing is worse than standing over a grill all day while others are having a great time.

Here is a great burger recipe sure to please:

Charlie’s Blue Cheese Burgers, makes 6 1/2 lb. burgers

  • 3 lbs lean ground chuck, divided into ¼” patties
  • 3 ozs blue cheese
  • 2 large yellow onions
  • very thinly sliced 3 large tomatoes
  • very thinly sliced 1 lb thin sliced bacon, fried until just done

Warning: Follow safe food handling procedures to prevent foodborne illnesses.

Make the patties large to contain the filling. For each burger use 2 patties. Layer a strip of bacon, a tablespoon of blue cheese, a slice of tomato and a slice of onion on 1 burger. Place another patty on top, and squeeze edges tightly together to insure filling stays inside. Grill each burger until the desired doneness is reached, and the blue cheese is beginning to ooze out of the patty. Serve immediately with side condiments and crunchy dill pickles.

Fireworks

Fireworks are always a big part of the Fourth. If you plan a fireworks display, be sure to first check with local authorities to see if it is legal to use them in your locale. Be cognizant of fire hazards, and keep a fire extinguisher and pails of water handy. Be sure young children are protected if you provide sparklers. Have a holder for the wire—as kids we used corn cobs. Keep a pail of water handy to dunk the hot wires into, and don’t allow the children to throw the dead wire on the ground as they will still be extremely hot.

Be Safe

Keep plenty of sunscreen, bandages for minor cuts and scrapes, and insect repellant on hand. If you serve alcohol, be sure that adults use it responsibly, and be sure to have a designated person that isn’t drinking to watch the children and supervise activities.

The secret to a good Fourth of July party is planning ahead. Use these tips to make your next Fourth of July a memorable one.
