5 Tips for Toilet Training Cats

Toilet training cats is something that many homeowners have tried unsuccessfully in the past. While it may seem difficult, it is definitely possible to teach your cat how to go to the bathroom in the toilet. Here are a few tips for toilet training your cat.

1. Make It Accessible

Whenever you are trying to toilet train your cat, you have to make sure that the toilet is accessible at all times. Many people get in the habit of closing the bathroom door when they are not using it. If you are planning on toilet training your cat, you are going to have to get out of the habit of doing so. You need to always leave the bathroom door open so that your cat can easily get to the bathroom. In addition to this, you should also get in the habit of leaving the lid open on the toilet. Many people regularly close the lid on the toilet. However, you need to remember to leave the lid open at all times.

2. Be Patient

When you are toilet training your cat, you should also keep in mind that you need to be patient at all times. You are not going to be able to train your cat to use the bathroom in a single day or even a week. This is going to be a process that takes several weeks before your cat will be able to consistently use the toilet. Do not develop unrealistic expectations for your cat, because you will most likely be disappointed.

3. Start Slow

You also need to remember to start slow with this process. Start out by putting the litter box on the floor next to the toilet. Let the cat get used to walking past the toilet in order to go to the bathroom.

4. Raise the Box

After your cat is used to coming in the bathroom to use the litter box, you should start slowly raising their box up off of the floor. Put something under the litter box such as a phone book in order to raise it 1 to 2 inches off of the floor. Then give the cat some time to get used to this height and move up the litter box again. Continue raising the height of the box until it is even with the toilet height. At that point, your cat is most likely going to start jumping up onto the toilet so that they can access the litter box. Let the cat get used to going to the bathroom directly beside the toilet in their litter box.

5. Move It onto the Toilet

After the cat is used to this process, you should move their litter box directly on top of the toilet. You will also want to put a metal mixing bowl into the toilet with some cat litter in it. They will start going in the mixing bowl and then you will have to start working with them on how to sit on the seat without falling into the toilet.
