6 Fiberglass Shower Floor Maintenance Tips

A fiberglass shower floor should be maintained to ensure that it does not become dull after years of use. Doing so requires some elbow grease on your part.

1. Provide Enough Ventilation in the Shower Room

If the shower is always wet, then mold, algae, water stains, and humidity can become a problem. Open the windows after every shower. Install an exhaust fan to reinforce ventilation, especially if the room is located in an area without much natural ventilation.

2. Purchase a Floor Mop

A floor mop can be used to dry the floor after every use. Make sure that the mop is cleaned and dried regularly so that it doesn't attract mold.

3. Use Liquid Soap

Bar soap is the primary cause of soap scum; therefore, you should use liquid soap as an alternative as much as possible. Unlike bar soap, liquid soap does not leave residue that becomes scum.

4. Clean Regularly

Flush soap lather down the drain after each use and remove hair from the floor. Left-over debris causes the moisture to stay on the floor for an extended period of time. Remove debris as soon as possible. Plan a weekly or bi-weekly cleaning routine.

Use mild detergent and a sponge to remove dirt and grime. Use bleach to clean mold. For safety purposes, use oxygen bleach as it is more environmentally-friendly. Dilute the bleach in a container and pour it onto the floor surface. Wait 10 minutes before scrubbing or brushing the floor. Rinse it well with water.

5. Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

If the floor develops a smell or becomes dull, baking soda and vinegar solution can make it really clean and fresh. Dilute 1-part vinegar with one 1-part water. Use a sponge to apply the solution onto the surface. Wait 10 minutes, then add some baking soda. The solution will create a reaction, but that is normal. Wipe the combination on the floor surface with a sponge. Wait another 20 minutes and rinse the residue with water. Wipe the floor dry with a cloth or a floor mop.

6. Polish It

Polishing gives the floor a glossy look. Use a commercial fiberglass polish or car wax. Rub the polish in a circular motion until it becomes glossy. Wait for the wax or polish to dry before using the shower.
