Mold and mildew on vinyl siding is a common problem that can be remedied with some effort and the right cleaning materials. Over time, mold can grow on a vinyl siding because it has not been cleaned for a while. Accumulated dirt, grime, grease and plant material can also provide the perfect breeding ground for mold. The methods described below will give you an idea about the vast number of cleaning methods you can use.
1 – Rinse the Siding with Water
If the mold has just started accumulating on the siding and you discover it on time, you can do a quick cleaning with water. Use a garden hose for this purpose. Remember to always work from the bottom up. Whether you use a garden hose or a pressure washer, never direct the water upwards. This will cause the water to collect behind the siding and possibly contribute to rot and other problems.
2 – Apply Cleaning Solution with a Long Handled Brush, Sponge or Soft Cloth
The method of application depends on the height and size of the siding. It also depends on the amount of mold and mildew that is accumulated on the siding. For a stubborn accumulation, you will need a soft-bristled brush. If you do not want to use a ladder, you can opt for a long-handled brush that can be extended and retracted as per need.
3 – Use Windex for Small Spots
If you have mold or mildew in small areas or patches, try cleaning it with Windex or another similar household cleaning solution. Before applying any cleaner, test the solution on an inconspicuous piece of the siding.
4 – Apply a Solution of Vinegar and Water
Vinegar is another excellent option for cleaning mold from vinyl siding. Make a solution with 30% vinegar and 70% water. Spray it on or apply it with a sponge or cloth. Let the solution sit for a few minutes and then scrub it off. Follow up with water.
5 – Use a Pressure Washer
Use a pressure washer with extreme caution. If the siding manufacturer discourages the use of a pressure washer, you must not use it. Use a lower setting if you do use the pressure washer. Keep the water away from joints and gaps in the siding.
6 – Apply Dishwashing Liquid
Dishwashing liquid can also do an excellent job of cleaning vinyl siding. Make a solution with a couple of cups of dishwashing liquid and a bucket of water. Apply it to the siding, scrub and wait for a few minutes before rinsing it off. Never let the soap solution dry on the siding.
7 – Apply Oxygen Bleach
Oxygen bleach is another option to consider. It will effectively remove mold and mildew from vinyl siding. Test on a small part before applying it everywhere. Avoid using chlorine bleach because it is harmful to vegetation.
8 – Apply a Solution of Trisodium Phosphate, Dishwashing Liquid, Oxygen Bleach, and Water
Mix half a cup of trisodium phosphate, half a cup of oxygen bleach, and a cup of dishwashing liquid in a bucket of water. Apply the solution to the siding, scrub and wait.
